State of Florida Approved BDI Course

Florida's First Traffic School offers a Florida online traffic school course that is fully approved by the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Known as the "DMV" in some states, this is the governing body that regulates driver improvement courses in the state of Florida.

The official title of our online course is the DTA Program for Driver Improvement. Our course has been completed by millions of Florida drivers online and in the classroom for nearly forty years.

Why take a chance with a company whose course has only been offered for a few months, is not DHSMV approved, or does not have an office in Florida? Choose Florida's First Traffic School instead, and you'll be glad you did.

"One of the main reasons I chose your course is that it was DMV approved. It was great to know the court would accept my certificate."

Who Should Attend the BDI Course?

The BDI course is DHSMV approved for the following attendance types, which are listed below in order of popularity.

Florida Ticket Point Dismissal

The majority of drivers elect to attend the BDI course to keep Florida ticket points off their driving record. Florida law states that if a driver voluntarily completes a basic driver improvement course for a moving violation, that driver's insurance company may not raise his or her rate unless the driver was at fault in a crash for which the insurer paid out a claim (§626.9541[1][o][12],F.S.).

As a result, many smart drivers sign up for the BDI course in order to keep their insurance rate low! For more information about elective BDI course attendance, read our Frequently Asked Questions.

Traffic Collision Avoidance Course (TCAC)

This type of attendance is ordered by the State (DHSMV). If a driver has been ordered to attend a BDI course for TCAC, he or she will have received a letter from the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. Failure to complete the course will result in driver license cancellation.

TCAC attendance is required when a driver has been involved in two traffic crashes within a two-year period, has been in a crash with at least $500 property damage, or has been in a crash in which injuries occurred.

Our Florida traffic school online course is approved by the DHSMV for mandatory TCAC course attendance. For more information about TCAC attendance, read our Frequently Asked Questions.

Court Ordered Attendance

If a driver contests a Florida moving violation in court, that driver might be ordered by a judge to attend the 4-hour Basic Driver Improvement course. The judge determines whether or not adjudication will be withheld, that is, whether the defendant will receive points for the ticket.

Our Florida online traffic school is accepted by all Florida courts for court-ordered BDI course attendance. For more information about court ordered BDI course attendance, read our Frequently Asked Questions.

DHSMV Directed Mandatory Attendance

The Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles requires mandatory attendance of a BDI course if a driver commits any of the following offenses:

  • Racing on highway (§316.191,F.S.)
  • Reckless driving (§316.192,F.S.)
  • Passing a stopped school bus (§316.172,F.S.)
  • Running a red light (§316.075[1][c],F.S.)

This type of attendance is mandated in §322.0261[4], F.S. For more information about this type of BDI course attendance, read our Frequently Asked Questions.
